Gospel of John, chapter 16
The Work of the Holy Spirit - Sorrow Will Turn to Joy - Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World
The Gospel of John, chapter 16 chapter 16 These things I have spoken to you in order that you might not fall away. Expelled from the synagogues they will make of you; but an hour is coming that anyone killing you will think he is offering a service to God. And these things they will do, because they have not known the Father nor me. But these things I have spoken to you so that when the time comes, you might remember them that I said to you. These things moreover to you from the beginning I did not say, because with you I was. Now however I am going to the one who sent me, and none of you asks me where are you going? But because these things I have said to you, sorrow has filled your heart. But I the truth I am saying to you; It is better for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the helper will not come to you; if however I go, I will send him to you; And having come he will judge the world concerning sin and concerning righteousness and concerning judgment. Concerning sin on one hand, because they don't believe in me; concerning righteousness on the other hand, because to my Father I am going and you behold me no more; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. Yet many things I have to say to you, but you are not able to bear them now. When however he comes, the Spirit of truth, will guide you to the whole truth; for he will not speak from himself, but whatever he might hear he shall speak, and the things to come will declare to you. He will glorify me, because from what is mine he will take and will disclose it to you. All things the Father has are mine; because of this I said that he is receiving from me and will declare to you. A little while and you do not behold me, and again a little while and you will see me, because I am going to the Father. Therefore they said some of his disciples to one another; what is this that he says to us, a little while and you do not behold me, and again a little while and you will see me, and that I am going to the Father? Therefore they were saying; what is this thing that he says, a little while? We do not know what he says. Jesus knew therefore that they wished to ask him, and he said to them; about this you are inquiring among one another that I said, a little while and you do not behold me, and again a little while and you will see me? Truly truly I say to you that you will weep and you will lament, while the world will rejoice; you instead will be grieved, but your grief will become joy; A woman when she is giving birth, has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she brings forth the child, she no longer remembers the sorrow through the joy that a human being has been born into the world. And you therefore indeed have sorrow now; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and the joy of yours no one will take from you. And in that day you will not ask me anything; truly truly I say to you that whatever you might ask the Father in my name, he will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy might be full. These things in allegories I have spoken to you; but an hour is coming when no more in allegories I will speak to you, but plainly about the Father I will announce to you. In that day in my name you will ask; and I do not tell you that I will implore the Father for you; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I from God I have come forth. I came forth from the Father and I have come into the world; again I am leaving the world and I am going to the Father. They said to him his disciples; behold now you are speaking frankly, and you are not saying no allegory. Now we know that you know everything and have no need that anyone should ask you. For this we believe that from God you came forth. Jesus replied to them; now you believe; Behold the hour is coming, and now has come, that you will be scattered, each one on his own and leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. These things I have spoken to you so that in me you might have peace. In the world you have grief; but be courageous, I have overcome the world.
