Gospel of John, chapter 3

The New Birth - John the Baptist Exalts Christ

The Gospel of John, chapter 3 Now there was a man from the Pharisees, his name was Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. He came to him by night and said to him; Rabbi, we know that from God you have come (as a) teacher; for no one these signs is able to perform which you are doing, if God is not with him. Jesus answered and said to him; truly truly I say to you, if someone is not born from above, he is not able to see the kingdom of God. says to him Nicodemus; how is possible for a man to be born being old? Is he able into the womb of his mother for a second time to enter and to be born? Jesus answered; truly truly I say to you, If someone is not born of water and (of) Spirit, he is not able to enter into the kingdom of God. The one having been born of the flesh flesh is, and the one having been born from the Spirit spirit is. Do not wonder that I said to you, it is necessary for you to be born from above. The wind blows where it wishes, and the sound of it you hear, but do not know from where it comes and where it goes; thus is everyone having been born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said to him; how is possible these things to be? Jesus answered and said to him; You are the teacher of Israel and these things you do not know? Truly truly I say to you that what we know we speak and what we have seen we bear witness of, and our testimony you do not receive. If the earthly things I have told you and you do not believe, how if I tell you the heavenly things will you believe? And no one has ascended into heaven if not (for) the one having descended from heaven, the son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted the serpent up in the desert, thus to be lifted up behoves the son of Man, so that everyone believing in him might not perish, but have eternal life. Thus indeed God loved the world, so that his son his only begotten (son) he gave, in order that everyone believing in him should not perish, but may have eternal life. For God did not send his son into the world so that he might judge the world, but in order that the world be saved through him. The one believing in him is not judged, the one however not believing has already been judged, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten son of God. Now this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men have loved rather the darkness than the light; for they were evil their deeds. For everyone who is practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, so that he might not be exposed for his deeds; The one however practicing the truth comes to the light, so that they are revealed his deeds, that in God have been performed. After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the Judean land, and there he was staying with them and was immersing. Moreover John was also immersing in Aenon near Salim, because many waters were there, and (people) were coming and being immersed; for he had not yet been cast John into the prison. Arose then a debate among the disciples of John with a Jew concerning purification. And they came to John and said to him; Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan river, to whom you have borne witness, behold he immerses and everyone are coming to him. John answered and said; A man is not able to receive anything, unless it is given to him from heaven. You yourselves bear as my witness that I said; I am not the Christ, but that I have been sent before him. The one having the bride is the bridegroom; moreover the friend of the bridegroom, the one standing and hearing him, rejoices with joy because of the voice of the bridegroom. This therefore the joy of mine is being fulfilled. For him it behoves to be growing, for me however to be diminishing. He who comes from above is above all. The one being from the earth is from the earth and speaks from the earth; he who comes from heaven is above all, and what he has seen and heard, this he testifies, and the testimony of him no one receives. The one having received the testimony of him has set his seal that God true is. For he whom God has sent, the words of God he speaks; for God indeed does not give by measure the (Holy) Spirit. The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into the hand of him. The one believing on the son has eternal life; the one however not obeying the son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.
